Introduction
This is a challenging neurological symptom to manage because there is a very long list of possible underlying causes – any neurological disorders that causes weakness of legs and arms (Article 11) and unsteadiness or clumsiness (Article 12) can cause slowness of movement.
As slowness of movement can be caused by Stroke, which is a life-threatening condition, patients who have this symptom are advised to immediately consult the Neurologist.
In this chapter, I would like to discuss a very common cause of slowness of movement – Parkinson’s disease (PD).
PD is a neurological disorder that usually affects the elderly people (more than 65 years old). However, it may occasionally occur in young people (20-40 years old). The tremor of PD is usually present when the hands and / or feet are rested. Some patients have jaw tremor. Most patients have stiffness of muscles. PD should be diagnosed because the treatment of PD is one of the most successful in the history of medicine – patients generally respond well to medications and brain surgery.
What will the Neurologist do for patients with dizziness?
The Neurologist will perform physical examination, blood tests and MRI scan of the brain. Some patients may need to be referred to the psychiatrist.
